What’s a Coolhunter?

01

Coolhunter is a new channel of short films on cool things.

Inspired by the 90’s, Coolhunters were cultural rebels, finding emerging trends in fashion, music, art, and subcultures, before things went mainstream. They searched for the coolest vibes, and other cultural phenomena, trendcasting and tapping into that edgy spirit of underground culture.

Somewhat autobiographical, somewhat filmesque. From heartbreak, to creating, to connecting, to 90s and nougthies nostalgia, Coolhunting feels like when you used to make mixtapes for friends or tell racy stories over cigarettes and analog phone lines. Handwritten notes with scratched out thoughts, oral histories-in-progress, and crate digging in record stores. Really, just the art of searching for something …

We’re all walking memories.

Let’s expand…

  • Why would something be Coolhunt-able?

It must spark an innate curiosity, instinct, and the excitement of "everything is new" or can be. It involves knowing how to observe and interpret ideas, being creative, tapping into a unique pop and subculture perspective, looking at meaningful curation, and living by that punk rock ethos of building things.

  • For decades Executive Producer Lauralee Sheehan, has been searching for cool things and living the “cool girl life” (consequences, sacrifices, detriments and all). She's been searching not just for cool things but for subcultures, for creative grit, for connection through the creation process, for true romance feelings and not just pertaining to romantic things. This project is an extension, or perhaps love letter to that lifestyle.

  • A few random things that directly (or indirectly) inspired this project.

    Gen X - just generally, Generation X.

Dear Mr You - this book by Mary Louise Parker had EP, Lauralee Sheehan in tears in Cartagena, in the Washington airport in line for customs, in many bars across Toronto, after a major breakup, this book became poetry and reason all at the same time. “thank you for lying on the hood of that car and watching stars plummet, thank you for the tour of the elevatar cage, the sound booth, the alley” … the sublime and grungy aspects of romance and foundational relationships. Say no more.

Polaroids from the Dead - this collection of short stories and essays was a jaw dropping read back in the 90s and that vibe maintained space in our heads to this day.

The Kills - the “Midnight Boom” album and U.R.A Fever track specifically. That was on vinyl repeat in a past grungy apartment where we all smoked too many cigarettes and stayed up too late, talking about how we were going to become indie famous.

Gone Girl - the vibe. The way the movie was filmed. The way Rosamund Pike is the baddest, major crushing on her!

Before Sunrise - train rides, adventures and exciting love with perfectly perfect banter. Be still our hearts.

This project is for the lovers, the dreamers, the make-believers. To all the coolhunters out there, what should we coolhunt next?

Let’s create our own movie moments.
